Supplementation of glucose precursors and rumen undegradable protein (RUP) may increase production response due to improved nutrient use efficiency. Ruminal production of acetate compared to propionate can lead to an imbalance in acetate:propionate ratio in forage-based production systems (McCollum and Galyean, 1985; Cronjé et al., 1991), leading to negative changes in energy metabolism.
